HOW NURSES HANDLE COVID-19

By Piper Edge / The Wire

Infusion nurse Marianne Otto-Smith says that being a nurse has changed dramatically since the outbreak of Covid-19 aka Corona Virus in February.

Otto-Smith became an oncologist after graduating from the John Hopkins Nursing school and then went on to be an infusion registered nurse for the last 25 years.

“Yes my work routine has certainly changed since the outbreak!” Otto-Smith said.

Otto-Smith is doing home visits in the Baltimore area but still has new routines she must follow in order to take health precautions. Anytime she logs into her work computer she must take a test that confirms she is healthy.

A screening test similar to the tests employees like Otto-Smith can be found here: COVID-19: Employee Screening Questions and Guidelines

The test that Otto-Smith must take started out by only screening 3 symptoms (fever, cough or shortness of breath) but now there are 8 symptoms health professionals must be free of in order to continue the treating of patients.

Health care professionals that work for the infusion nursing company must be tested for Covid-19 if they show even just one symptom of the virus. In addition to them being screened, any patient that receives a home visit must be tested as well to ensure they do not have symptoms or have contacted someone with symptoms.

Ensuring the health of patients is important to the infusion nursing company Otto-Smith works for. However, it’s crucial for the nurses to take their safety seriously as well to not only protect their safety but to reduce the rapid spread of Covid-19.

By keeping nurses and healthcare professionals constantly screened and tested it ensures that they won’t be the cause of any spreading of the virus and hopefully will help contain the virus.

“It is a complex algorithm that we follow. The algorithm will determine how we need to proceed to keep patients and health care workers safe.” says Otto-Smith.

Containing the virus through social distancing is the only way we can stop the spread of Covid-19. Here are some other things you can do on your own to protect yourself and others:
